Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me … and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple– truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.” (Matthew 10: 40, 42)
The Seamen’s Church Institute’s center at Port Newark opened its newly renovated seafarers’ center early in 2011, and St. Luke’s has resumed the hospitality evenings with the seafarers on an almost monthly basis. All are welcome to join us as we welcome seafarers, most of whom are young men who spend months away from home working on the ships that transport goods throughout the world.
The Seamen’s Church Institute provides the seafarers with an opportunity to contact family and friends via phone or Internet, and we provide snacks and desserts and sometimes live music to lend a party atmosphere to their shore leave.
We also collect donations of toiletries and magazines, and a group of knitters meet weekly on Thursday mornings in the Canterbury Room to make watch caps, scarves, vests, and more. Donations may be left in the box under the coat rack next to the church kitchen, where Ken Erb will pick them up and deliver them weekly.
Join us at 6:45 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month for our monthly worship service with the residents at:
Matheny School & Hospital on Highland Ave, Peapack, NJ
The residents bring such joy to this service, it is truly wonderful to behold!
If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Anne Lemay.
Third Tuesday dates for 2014: May 20, June 17.
