Music
Music is an integral part of the worship experience
at St. Luke's Church. Each Sunday, hymns,
chants, Communion settings, and anthems are
interwoven into the liturgy, which reflect
and comment on the Biblical readings and season
of the liturgical year.
The Chancel Choir, comprised of high school
students and older, sings each Sunday from
September through June. Anthems and motets,
ranging in style from the Renaissance through
the 20th century, and new musical works, as
well, are incorporated into the worship service.
The Chancel Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings
from 7:30-9 p.m. from September through May.
If you would like information on how to become
a member of the Chancel Choir, please contact
Music Director Randall Svane at 973-783-6787
(rsvane@verizon.net), or speak with any member
of the choir.
It is difficult to imagine anything more thrilling
than the sounds of children's voices lifted
in songs of praise. St. Luke's is blessed
with an exuberant Children's Choir which never
fails to inspire. These young singers perform
on a monthly basis. Rehearsals are held on
Friday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in Greene Hall.
For information on how your child may become
of member of the Children's Choir, please
contact Director Stephen Sands at stephen@sands.net.

Throughout the year, organ music by the great
masters, such as J.S. Bach, Dieterrich Buxtehude,
César Franck, Louis Vierne, Maurice Duruflé
and others are performed as preludes and postludes.
Occasionally, professional instrumentalists
from the NYC area, including brass, strings,
and harp also perform. This is particularly
true during the Festival seasons, such as
Christmas and Easter.
Youth in Worship/Godly
Play
We love young children! During the beginning
of our 9:15 service, children ages 4 through
7 congregate in a sunlit classroom for our
Children’s Worship Service. We follow the
“Godly Play” format developed by Sonja Stewart
and Jerome Berryman specifically for this
age group to help them nurture their faith
and prepare to join in the full life of the
congregation.
Children’s Worship introduces young children
to the wonders of worship. The approach involves
activities in which children use all their
senses to experience God in biblical stories,
parables and worship through art, storytelling,
songs and signing. We seek to create an environment
where children can meet and worship God in
a setting that is comfortable to them.
The children are brought into the sanctuary
for the latter part of the 9:15 service to
join their parents and participate in communion.
On the first Sunday of each month, we join
the older children (ages 8 through 12) for
the Youth and Worship Eucharist in Greene
Hall, led by one of our priests. During these
services, young children have the opportunity
to see up close how the celebrant prepares
the Eucharist, while the meaning of each part
of the preparation is explained to them.
We hope to see you and your children soon!
Serving God in Worship
The Altar Guild at St. Luke’s is a ministry
dedicated to making the altar and the church
ready for worship on Sundays and holy days
as well as for baptisms, weddings and funerals.
Taken from “The New Altar Guild Book,” “altar
guilds today are groups of men and women who
are called to serve God by preparing and tending
the places where Episcopalians worship. Wherever
they are, the work they do together is an
offering of time and many talents. It is a
ministry of love undertaken in the name of
Christ.”
The Altar
Guild is a specialized
ministry within the church which operates
primarily behind-the-scenes. In an attempt
to de-mystify the tasks of the Guild, a pictorial
guidebook provides directions for baptisms,
funerals and weddings, instructional photos,
and weekly checklists. Training is available
to all interested congregants. Interested
parties should contact the parish office for
more information.
Guild of
Acolytes –
Young people from fifth grade and up are invited
to serve as acolytes. Training by our clergy
is provided as needed during the year. Anyone
is welcome to perform this important role
in our church service.
Guild of
Ushers –
About 40 men and women, as well as our Confirmation
Class, usher at three services each Sunday
fall through spring, and at two services during
the summer. Their role is important to the
flow of the service, as well as the extension
of hospitality to all who enter.
Guild of
Lay Readers –
It is more blessed to give than
to receive.Acts 20:35
The Guild of Lay Readers work together seamlessly
in providing readings from one or both lessons
from Scripture, the Psalm, the Prayers of
the People and offering the chalice during
Holy Communion at our three worship services.
In addition, once a month
we visit Bryan Manor, a senior residence,
to offer a short service complete with prayers,
hymns and a brief homily. In conjunction with
the Lay Readers, we have a group of Lay Eucharist
Visitors who take Communion to people who
are unable to attend our services. This new
ministry has been well received by those recipients
who find themselves isolated or infirm yet
want Holy Communion.
It is our pleasure to serve you!
