Fall Topic: The Screwtape Letters, by C.S. Lewis

Combining the features of a book club or reading group with the informal conversations that thrive around the table at a tavern – St. Luke’s “Tavern Talk” is a new group forming this Fall. We will meet at the Gladstone Tavern a couple of times a season. We will get a table, order whatever we like and then talk about all things spiritual, especially focusing on a section of a book. C.S. Lewis himself, along with J.R.R. Tolkien and others used to gather at a pub in Oxford (The Eagle and the Child) to discuss each other’s writings in a group they called “The Inklings”. This Fall our focus will be on Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters. Screwtape is a senior devil instructing a junior devil on how to lead someone away from God. This book has been described as a “masterpiece of religious satire that is wildly comic, deadly serious and strikingly original.” We will continue the tradition of the Oxford Inklings in Gladstone as we consider some classic themes regarding the spiritual life, temptation, discipleship and so much more in this fictional work of C. S. Lewis that is packed with a lot of spiritual truth! You are welcome to come even if you haven’t been able to do the readings. You don’t have to come to all the meetings – just come when you can! Contact Kent if you are interested, even if you can’t make the meetings.

This week’s topic- discussing letters 6-15.
